Once the capital of Palawan, Taytay's history is written in coral stone and centuries of coastal resilience.
Long before Puerto Princesa became the center of the island, Taytay held the title of the capital of the Calamianes province (which at the time encompassed the entire island of Paragua, today known as Palawan). Formally founded in 1623 by Spanish colonizers, Taytay served as the administrative and military heart of the region.
Known fondly as the "Star of the North", the town's name itself is derived from the local word "taytay", meaning "bridge". This is widely believed to refer to a wooden bridge that originally connected the mainland to the coral rock where its famous fortress stands today.
The most iconic testament to Taytay's history is Fort Santa Isabel. Construction of this imposing stone fortress began in 1667 under the supervision of Augustinian Recollect Fathers. Taking over 70 years to complete (finished in 1738), the fort was built using forced labor (polo y servicios) and massive coral rocks hauled manually from the sea.
The primary reason for the construction of Fort Santa Isabel was defense. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the coastal towns of Palawan were under constant threat from Moro pirates coming from the southern Philippines. These raiders sought captives to be sold into the bustling Southeast Asian slave trade.
The fort's quadrilateral design features four bastions pointing outwards, named after saints: San Toribio, Santa Isabel, San Juan, and San Manuel. From these strategic vantage points over Taytay Bay, Spanish forces and local defenders could spot incoming pirate fleets miles away.
In the 19th century, the fort was formally named in honor of Queen Isabela II of Spain. For over two centuries, the fort was the seat of power. In 1858, when the province was divided, Taytay became the capital of the newly formed province of Castilla (northern Palawan).
However, as Puerto Princesa grew in strategic and commercial importance further south, the administrative center slowly shifted. Eventually, Taytay yielded its capital status, freezing the town in time and preserving much of its colonial and local charm.
Today, Fort Santa Isabel stands remarkably well-preserved. Inside its thick coral walls, visitors can explore a small museum detailing the colonial history, a historic chapel, and climb the bastions for an unmatched panoramic view of Taytay Bay.
